Write for the Skimmer

Most people do not read a webpage word by word. They skim, hunting for the part that matters to them. If your writing does not survive a quick scan, it will not get the chance to be read slowly. Writing for the skimmer is not dumbing down; it is respecting how people actually consume the web.

Structure the page for speed

Use clear headlines, subheads, and short paragraphs. Put the key idea near the top and break the rest into digestible pieces. A skimmer should be able to understand the gist in a few seconds and then decide where to dive in. That structure turns scanning from a flaw into a feature.

Front-load the meaning

Begin paragraphs with the point, not the preamble. Cut the warm-up sentences and get to the useful part quickly. When every paragraph starts with the conclusion, even a reader who only skims the openings leaves with the message. That is the mark of writing built for the real world.
