What a Good Landing Page Actually Does

A landing page has one job: turn attention into action. That sounds simple, but most pages fail because they try to do too much at once. They welcome, explain, entertain, and sell all on the same screen, and the visitor leaves without doing any of it. A good landing page is built from a single decision.

One promise, one path

Start by deciding the one action you want the visitor to take, then make everything on the page support that action. The headline should promise something specific, the copy should reinforce it, and the call to action should be impossible to miss. If an element does not help the visitor take that step, remove it.

Match the promise that brought them

Visitors arrive for a reason, usually from an ad, an email, or a search result. Your page must continue the exact promise that brought them there. If the message changes, they feel tricked and leave. Keep the path straight from promise to action, and the page will convert.
